We don't publish prices or star ratings, every pick names an honest drawback, and we never invent a spec we can't verify against a published rating.

Most "best air conditioner" roundups repeat the biggest BTU number on the box. Since a 2017 DOE rule, portable ACs must also carry a SACC rating that's typically 25–45% lower than that ASHRAE number — so a "14,000 BTU" portable can genuinely cool like a 7,000-BTU machine. Window units carry no hose-loss penalty at all and are rated in CEER, not SEER. A fan, no matter how it's marketed, cools you, not the room.
